1st Stamp Issue of Philately Liechtenstein 2022

Provisional Stamps 2022

After almost ten years, Philately Liechtenstein is again using the overprinting method for two of its existing definitive stamps. In this procedure, which used to be very common, the original face value of the stamp is visibly corrected. The price increases of Liechtensteinische Post AG after seventeen years have made this necessary. As of January 2022, it will increase the prices for A mail letters by 10 centimes (new CHF 1.10) and for B mail letters by 5 centimes (new CHF 0.90). The self-adhesive definitive stamp "Citril Finch" from 2021 will now be issued at a face value of CHF 0.90 (previously CHF 1.00) due to the overprint and the "Peacock Butterfly" from 2011 will now have a face value of CHF 1.10 (previously CHF 2.20).

Wild Bees

Four wild bees adorn the latest issue of self-adhesive definitive stamps. The "Large Scabious Mining Bee" (face value: CHF 0.90) can be seen in the summer months from June to August. One of the largest bees in the Liechtenstein region is the "Carpenter Bee" (face value: CHF 1.10), which can grow up to three centimetres long. The habitat of the "Mountain Bumblebee" (face value: CHF 1.80) is in sparse woods in the high mountains. The last of the lot is the "Cuckoo Bee" (face value: CHF 2.30). Unlike the other wild bee species, it does not look after its brood but instead lays its eggs in the nest of a Macropis bee like a cuckoo.

Beijing Winter Olympics

China's capital Beijing will host the 2022 Winter Olympics, making it the first city in the world to host both a summer and winter edition of the Olympic Games. From 4 to 20 February 2022, a total of 109 competitions in seven Olympic disciplines will take place at the three venues Beijing, Yanging and Zhangjiakou. Chinese artist Huming Wang (Design Director of China National Philatelic Company) designed the two special stamps "Skiing" (face value: CHF 1.10) and "Two-man Bobsleigh" (face value: CHF 2.10), each of which was produced by applying high-relief and foil embossing.

Issue date: 4 February 2022

Chimney Sweep "Good Luck“

The good luck often quoted in good wishes can now also be conveyed through two stamps. "Horseshoe" (face value: CHF 0.90) and "Cloverleaf" (face value: CHF 1.10) are appearing as special stamps with exclusive gold foil embossing. In addition to the phrase "Good luck" in five different languages, a horseshoe and cloverleaf adorn the stamps as symbols of good luck. However, portraits of a female chimney sweep and a male chimney sweep, which also frequently appear as lucky charms, take centre stage.

400th Birthday of Molière

Philately is dedicating a special block with three stamps to the French actor, theatre director and playwright "Molière" on the 400th anniversary of his birthday. He is considered one of the great classics and helped comedy to become a genre potentially equal to tragedy in the theatre world. The special souvenir sheet shows a portrait of Molière in the centre (face value: CHF 4.10), while scenes from his plays are depicted in the background of the two stamps at the side "Troupe du Roi" (King’s Troop; face value: CHF 1.10) and "L'école des Femmes" (The School of Women; face value: CHF 1.10).

Europa – Stories and Myths

Two new special stamps, printed together on 4-stamp sheetlets, are Liechtenstein's contribution to this year's Europa stamps on stories and myths. "The White Woman" (face value: CHF 1.80) is a figure that appears in numerous legends and myths in these parts. As a rule, she appears as a harmless being whom observers see by chance or notice by their having an uneasy feeling. A mythical figure from the alpine region is "The Tälibudel" (face value: CHF 1.80). The spirit in dog-like form with fiery red eyes is said to have chased an alpine shepherd out of his hut. The first day issue of this stamp features the mullein, which stands for fearlessness and protection from evil spirits.
