In most of the world’s monarchies the depicting of living persons on stamps is confined strictly to members of the family of the particular head of state. Likewise in the Principality of Liechtenstein. Over the decades this has given rise in the Alpine monarchy to the lovely tradition of immortalising on a series of stamps even the youngest representatives of the Princely House. This happened as long ago as 1955 in the case of the then ten-year-old Hereditary Prince, now Prince Hans-Adam II von und zu Liechtenstein; the present issue now depicts some of his grandchildren too, namely the children of the Hereditary Prince and Princess. Of the marriage concluded in Vaduz in 1993 between Hereditary Prince Alois von und zu Liechtenstein and Duchess Sophie in Bayern four children were born, to whom a stamp series of their own is now dedicated: the future successor to the throne Prince Joseph Wenzel, born 24 May 1995 (face value CHF 2.60), his sister Princess Marie Caroline, born 17 October 1996 (face value CHF 2.00) together with Prince Georg, born 20 April 1999 (face value CHF 1.80) and Prince Nikolaus, born 6th December 2000 (face value CHF 1.00). These stamps, produced at the Austrian State Printing House by steelengraving/ photogravure combination printing, are modelled on portraits by the French artist Ludmila d‘Oultremont. These pictures form part of the Princely House’s private collection. The steel engraving by Adolf Tuma captures the portraits’ filigree brush-strokes and lightness in masterly fashion.
