A Young Woman on a Balcony
Face value CHF 1.50
Motif A Young Woman on a Balcony

The painting entitled "A Young Woman on a Balcony" (value CHF 1.50) from the 17th century graces the new, completely steel-engraved joint issue stamp of the Czech Republic and Liechtenstein. The work by the Dutch artist Gerrit Dou (1613-1675) hangs in the National Gallery of Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. It is one of the works of art donated by Johann II of Liechtenstein to the then private company of patriotic art lovers, the direct predecessor of today's National Gallery.
Like Liechtenstein, the Czech Republic is a landlocked country with a population of around 10.5 million. It comprises the three historic territories of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. Its capital, Prague, is home to architecturally significant buildings from the various epochs of European art history. Outstanding building and cultural monuments are also to be found beyond the environs of the country's capital. The Czech Republic alone boasts twelve UNESCO World Heritage Sites, one of which is the cultural landscape of Eisgrub-Feldsberg, a landscape complex covering an area of 283 square kilometres which the princes of Liechtenstein converted into a nature park in the 18th and 19th centuries.
