The Liechtensteiners sometimes give the impression of being a nation of collectors. From stamps to Easter eggs, old masters and typewriters there is always one passionate individual who does everything possible in his spare time to enlarge his existing collection or – which is much more difficult – to limit it to the really important collector’s pieces. With the new five-part stamp series “Collections in Liechtenstein: Classic cars” Philately Liechtenstein seeks to pay a special philatelic tribute to these specialists whose work is done mostly out of public view. This series is initiated by so-called veteran cars, i.e. still roadworthy classic cars taken out on the road on special occasions. With the assistance of the Liechtenstein Veteran Vehicle Club (MVCL) four vehicles were selected, all produced before 1921 and all now in collections in Liechtenstein. The oldest model is a rare 1908 Brasier racing-car (face value CHF 0.85). Henri Brasier was a French engineer who built automobiles in a Paris suburb from 1901 onwards. Of somewhat more recent date is the steam-driven Stanley Steamer built in 1911 (face value CHF 1.00) by the American twins Francis Edgar and Freelan Oscar Stanley of Newton (MA). The best-known model in this series is probably the 1915 Ford T Speedster (face value CHF 1.40), the sporty version of the famous “Tin Lizzie”, one of the world’s highest-volume cars. The series is rounded off by the 1920 Hinstin (face value CHF 1.90), a true rarity. This car was built by Jacques Hinstin of Maubeuge (France), whose firm produced only three different models of car between 1920 and 1926.
The artwork for the stamps comprises not photographs, but oil paintings by the Canadian painter Mark Heine. The lettering on the stamps is stamped in gold foil.
