It happens repeatedly that national postal administrations join forces to bring out a joint stamp. The purpose may be to lend special significance to a particular anniversary or just to document in an agreeable way the good understanding between two countries. In the past Liechtenstein has entered into various working affiliations of this kind with, for example, Switzerland, China, Costa Rica and neighbouring Austria. This year it is again the friendly and neighbourly relations between Liechtenstein and Switzerland which are the focus of such a joint stamp, entitled “Horizon Switzerland”. The distinctive feature of this stamp is surely that it is obtainable in both Switzerland and Liechtenstein in the same currency, since Swiss francs are of course also the Principality’s medium of exchange. The initiator behind selection of the depicted artwork “Fruit” by the artist Shirana Shahbazi was Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, which approached Philatelie Liechtenstein about the current “Horizon Switzerland" exhibition presenting works of space-oriented art from Switzerland. From among the numerous artworks represented at the exhibition the choice eventually fell on Shirana Shahbazi’s 2009 photograph “Fruit” (face value CHF 1.00) from the series “Flowers, Fruit and Portraits”. Shirana Shahbazi was born in Tehran (Iran) in 1974 and moved to Germany in 1985. From 1995 to 1997 she studied Photography and Design at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences, and from 1997 to 2000 Photography at the University of the Arts in Zurich, where she has since lived. Since 2001 her artworks have been on display at single and collective exhibitions all over the world. Her artistic output has earned her various grants and awards. “Fruit” shows an apple with a cluster of leaves on a yellow and black ground.
