With its “Orchids” issue, Philately Liechtenstein is highlighting the
often hidden beauty of Liechtenstein's flora. The two special stamps are
dedicated to wild orchid species that are as fascinating for their
beauty as they are for their rarity.
The special stamp “Yellow
lady's slipper” (Cypripedium calceolus, face value CHF 1.20) is one of
the most magnificent wild orchid species in Europe and is strictly
protected. It prefers to grow in sparse deciduous forests, bushes, or
dry grasslands and reaches altitudes of up to 2000 m. In Liechtenstein,
it can be found sporadically on lower slopes and in alpine areas.
The
second special stamp, “Helmet orchid” (Orchis militaris, face value CHF
1.90), depicts a stately wild orchid species that is mainly found in
Central Europe. The species is protected in Liechtenstein and can be
observed scattered across the nutrient-poor grasslands of the valley
floor in early spring.
